Grants Stack Winds Down—Here’s What’s Changing and What To Expect

Gitcoin will sunset Grants Stack and Grants Lab by May 27, 2025, to fully focus on the Gitcoin Grants Program. Grants rounds continue, data stays accessible via Open Source Observer, and future infrastructure will be community-governed—doubling down on funding what matters in Ethereum.

Gitcoin is sunsetting its Grants Stack technology and the Grants Lab business unit by May 27th, 2025. This decision allows Gitcoin to refocus entirely on its core: the Gitcoin Grants Program. We’re launching a new and improved version of the program in 2025 with a more ambitious, community-driven strategy—designed to fund what matters most in the Ethereum ecosystem. The tech stack will change, but the mission remains: to empower Ethereum to coordinate and fund its future.

What’s Happening Next

Moving Off Grants Stack

  • The existing Grants Stack will be sunset by May 27th, 2025.
  • All data will be preserved and accessible through Open Source Observer moving forward.
  • OSO will create an easy walkthrough and guideline on how anyone can access their data at any time.
  • Future infrastructure will be selected through governance, allowing community-aligned tech providers to propose new solutions.
  • Some technology and active builds may be handed off to trusted ecosystem partners.
  • Grants rounds will continue. Projects can still apply, communities can still donate, and Gitcoin will continue to fund what matters.
  • Partners have been contacted directly for tailored transition plans and support.
  • If you staked GTC during GG23, you may unstake at any time (even after the shutdown) by heading to claim.gitcoin.co. Staking rewards have been automatically distributed.

Data Migration and Next Steps

As the data layer will be shut down alongside our product suite, it’s of vital importance to us that we maintain the integrity of the data migration. Open Source Observer holds all historical data, and after May 27th, anyone will be able to access data through OSO. There will be guidelines and walkthroughs created on how to access data at any time through their platform. More information on these steps will be released closer to the shutdown date.

Doubling Down on the Grants Program

Going forward, Gitcoin will lean into its roots by investing more deeply into the Gitcoin Grants Program. This means:

  • Enhancing the user experience for both grantees and donors.
  • Continuing to experiment with new funding mechanisms within the Grants Program.
  • Increasing community participation and enabling contributors to help shape Gitcoin’s future.
  • Exploring GTC utility and governance improvements, in collaboration with the community.
  • Deepening its impact on Ethereum and digital public goods through targeted grants infrastructure and ecosystem partnerships.

An updated roadmap (Road to GG24) will be posted to our governance forum shortly.

In Summary

This is not the end of Gitcoin—it's a return to its core. By sunsetting Grants Stack and Grants Lab, Gitcoin is doubling down on its mission: to fund what matters. The future of Gitcoin lies in community-driven innovation, deep ecosystem collaboration, and a continued focus on building sustainable funding for open-source software and public goods.

More updates to follow soon as Gitcoin prepares for GG24 and beyond.
